Stefania Pinci’s painting approach seems to aim at being a bridge between the past and the present; the past of Impressionism, which brought late 19th-century painting into a new dimension, that of decomposition, and the present of high-definition images in modern communication languages, in turn generated through pixels, which can be seen as a contemporary realization of the earlier insight of the Impressionists.
But Pinci doesn’t stop there, as she explores and traces the early marks of figurative expression from many centuries ago, updating the classic mosaic technique to modify and reshape it, transforming it into a completely original language that defines her absolute uniqueness.
Her works tell of emotions, of everything that strikes a simple, natural sensitivity, an inner world that does not hide but rather desires to narrate through images everything it receives from the surrounding environment and transforms into unique and intangible sensations that must be expressed. The landscapes are filtered through an emotional screen, in the Expressionist manner, so the colors often do not correspond to what the eye is accustomed to seeing in nature, but are instead tied to the perception the artist receives from the scene based on their personal state of mind. The images are simultaneously finely detailed, through delicate and brief touches that, only when viewed from a distance, offer a more global idea of the final landscape.
The greatest surprise, however, lies in the tesserae of painted mosaics, true figurative tiles through which she reassembles or defines the rest of the work. In other cases, she uses them as frames to enhance the central subject, and at times, they even enter the center of the painting, seemingly wanting to play with the surrounding reality, decompose it, and serve as a breaking element with what is linear. The chosen tones vibrate and engage the observer, leading them into the artist’s intense world, allowing them to pause and reflect on their inner universe and the sensations that usually slip away quickly in daily life. At the same time, they prompt the viewer to question how many of the tiles that Pinci emphasizes are important in the construction of each individual’s essence. Yes, because the existential and philosophical message that emerges from her works is precisely the need to defragment in order to rebuild a new self, to decompose and relinquish the known in order to make the leap that leads to greater awareness. It is only by setting aside the certainty of order, of everything that is predetermined, that one can look at the world and life from a completely new perspective.
Through the division into tiles, one can reassemble a different puzzle, an image of ourselves that we did not know before, one that has made us more evolved, more sensitive, and more empathetic. The contemporaneity of Stefania Pinci’s expressive medium blends with the classicism of a return to naturalness, to that en plein air world which is often abandoned because life today pulls us into the speed of large urban centers, where everything happens quickly, and where running is the imperative. In this case, the artist’s voice becomes an exhortation to recover a slower pace, to focus on the need to reconnect with the simpler part of ourselves, more closely linked to the earth, the sky, and those natural elements that enhance emotions and slow down the pulsating beat of a daily life that seems to thrive on urgency. When she detaches from the landscape and makes women the protagonists, she imbues them with a dreamy, ethereal aura, immersing them in the surrounding landscape, which becomes merely the backdrop to their feelings. She incorporates delicate elements like flowers, lightness, and the need for serenity that shines through their faces. And the tiles outline and define their details, telling the story of their desire for color, highlighting their uniqueness, even when, through their presence, they soften the definition of the background.
Her emotions through images tell of moments, of instances that evoke memories or present sensations, always within the depth of a purity of soul that is exalted in contact with nature, with the gentle breath of the wind, and in the colors of a sunset. Stefania Pinci selects and experiments with various materials before reaching her current distinctive style, a journey that began with her academic studies at the State Art High School in Rome and continued with a degree in Modern Literature, specializing in the History of Modern Art, under the guidance of Carlo Argan. These studies ultimately led her to express her creativity.
